Rubber can last a surprisingly long time. According to Green Match, a home improvement resource, rubber can take 300 years to fully break down in organic matter like compost or soil. However, minimum maintenance is required.
You can use a leaf blower to remove leaves and other lightweight yard debris. In our experience, for playground applications, it's very important to level the rubber surface regularly to ensure a minimum 4” depth is maintained for up to a 9-foot fall height. This regular maintenance can be done with a large leaf rake. Contact us today to learn more about your rubber mulch.
Plants thrive under Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ which helps the ground retain moisture. Our rubber mulch does not retain water and will not promote mold or fungus growth like organic mulch will.

For play areas, weed barriers are a must. Our 8-ounce Geotextile fabric is the ultimate barrier against weeds and mud. For landscape areas, some people like a weed barrier and some do not. In our experience, it depends on the type of plants, flowers, and bushes, whether they are in direct sun, and for how long.
The greater the amount of sun exposure (heat), the greater the stress on the plantings. Weed barriers do a good job of retaining moisture and lessening heat. To date, the only weed we've seen will grow through any weed barrier is the nutsedge. It has to be sprayed instead of picked out because it has underground, linear runners that contain seeds that will eventually germinate.
There are a couple of very effective sprays (called Manage) that will eliminate nutsedge with repeated spraying without harming your plants or the rubber mulch. The other preventative measure we suggest is to cast Preen, which is non-toxic, over the entire area in early spring and summer. This inhibits the germination of weeds. Preen will not harm plantings or our rubber mulch.
